How do prediction markets settle?

By Editorial Team · Updated November 3, 2026 · How we research this

Short answer A prediction market settles when the event resolves against a written rule, at which point winning contracts pay $1 and losing ones pay $0. Settlement is governed by that rule's wording, not by what most people assume the event meant. Disputed or ambiguous outcomes are resolved by the venue's designated resolution process, which can delay payout.

Settlement is the least glamorous and most consequential part of a prediction market. Everything before it — the price, the edge, the strategy — is only realised at settlement, and settlement is decided by one thing above all: the wording of the rule.

The resolution rule is the contract

Every market carries a written resolution rule, usually in fine print near the bottom of the page. It defines, precisely, what counts as the event happening. Examples of how wording changes everything:

  • “Candidate X wins the election” vs “Candidate X is certified as the winner” — different events, different settlement dates.
  • “Team A wins” vs “Team A wins in regulation time” — a draw or extra-time result settles them differently.
  • “The bill passes” vs “The bill is signed into law” — a veto between the two changes the outcome.

Most disputes are not about the facts. Both sides agree on what happened. They disagree on which box the facts fall into, and that is determined by the rule’s wording.

How resolution actually happens

For crypto-native markets, an oracle or a resolution source — often a named data provider or a designated resolver — reports the outcome, and the venue settles contracts accordingly. For regulated venues, the settlement is governed by their licence and dispute procedures.

In both cases the mechanism matters less than the answer to one question: who decides, and can you appeal? On a licensed sportsbook you have a named regulator to escalate to. On a crypto-native market, resolution often rests with whoever the venue designated, and recourse is limited.

Disputes and delays

A disputed market can sit unresolved for days or weeks while the venue sorts out the wording. During that time your balance is frozen in the contract. Three lessons follow:

  1. Read the rule before you trade, not after. If you cannot say precisely what makes it pay $1, you do not understand the trade.
  2. Prefer markets with unambiguous, verifiable outcomes. “Highest certified vote total” is clean. “Most popular candidate” is not.
  3. Know your recourse. Before depositing, find out what happens when a settlement is disputed. The answer tells you more about the venue’s quality than its marketing does.

The takeaway

Price is the market’s opinion. Liquidity is whether you can trade. Settlement is whether you actually get paid. Of the three, settlement is the one people research last — and it is the one that determines whether the whole exercise was real or just theatre.
